We named our company 'Village' because it takes a digital village to raise a digital citizen. We know how challenging it is to set limits for our own teens when most of their friends are using Instagram and Snapchat. We're here to be your village and offer you guides and a real alternative to social media for your kids where you can be involved and train them how to be responsible, all while they connect with friends.
You’re aware of the dangers of unrestricted smartphones and unlimited social media and want to protect your kid. However, you know it will be a constant battle if their friends have access to everything you’re trying to protect against. How do you invite others to support your goals? By hosting a village party.
A village party gives you the chance to invite your kid’s friends and their parents (or your friends and their kids) to learn about the harms of social media and unlimited tech, discover Village's Technology Journey and set up accounts on Village Social. You can connect immediately, since you can easily share usernames, and give a brief walk through of the app.
With just an hour of your time, you can lay the foundation for a fresh approach to socializing digitally with friends and create a healthy environment in which your kids can learn how to be a digital citizen.
While no two parties alike, we've found the following topics make for good conversation and actionable plans along with some food and beverages! Here's a summary or feel free to review our host guide.
Personal stories or experiences about screen time or social media are a great way to connect with other parents. Have you read books or articles that other parents should know about? Have your kids had negative experiences?
It's okay if you don't have stories or aren't comfortable sharing. We've created a video you can play at your party, or simply sharing the Learn section of our website should provide enough information to show parents why we need to provide our kids a better option.
The amazing part of the technology journey is that it respects and embraces different points of view. It's a fact that parents will give their own kids smartphones and access to social media at different ages. Our goal is to help parents understand the importance of setting time limits and approving all apps that their kid's use. Our app works on any device with a browser. We believe that all kids should be included and able to build relationships even without having a phone.
The technology journey outlines how to set up parental controls on iPhones and Android devices. It also offers things to consider in each phase to determine where your kid is on their individual journey. It provides a balanced approach to giving access to your kids all while encouraging discussion and cooperation between parent and child.
Village Social is a private social network, which is great for families because it gives an added layer of protection from kids finding strangers or the other way around. However, because it's private, we don't offer up friend suggestions. Therefor, it takes a little more work to get all the parents and kids connected on Village. Use the end of the party to create parent and kid accounts, share usernames and send a group message to connect everyone for future socializing.
If people weren't able to attend, create a social post and share via text message as an easy invite for them to join the group.
Use the online form to schedule your party. A custom webpage is created to explain the party and include the specific details for your party. If you request Adam or Dana from Village to facilitate the party virtually, we'll promptly confirm if the time is available.
You will receive an email with a link to your custom website (village.com/village-party/host-name). Visit your custom webpage and use the sharing icons to send directly to friends via text or email or post to your Facebook page. When friends RSVP on your page, you will receive an email notification.
